RARE YOGAS

Sri Nanda Yoga

26. Meaning: Venus and Moon in Pisces, Jupiter in Cancer and malefics in the third and eleventh house constitute a yoga called as Sri Nanda Yoga which will give fame to the native. He will be in possession of wealth, will be held in honour, will be comfortable, will be a person enjoying worldly pleasures and will be very well versed in worship through recital of Mantras. Sri Nanda Yoga person will be calm in disposition and will be having very good qualities.

Chandrashekar’s Comments: This is a variation of Matta Matanga Yoga mentioned in Chandra Kala Nadi. 3

Vipatti Yoga

27. Meaning: Rahu in the 11th house, Saturn in the 5th house, Mars in the 10th house and aspected by Sun and Venus creates Vipatti Yoga. A person having this yoga in his birth chart would have killed a child in his previous birth. He should chant the nine Bhijakshara Mantra of Saturn, Rahu and Mars.

Explanations: One of the name given to Shani as per Sarvartha Chinthamani is ‘Souri’ Here in this work the author refers to Saturn as ‘Shouri’. Vipatti means calamity. For the given combinations, Ketu will be with Saturn and Rahu as well as Mars will be aspecting Saturn. It is not clear as to the aspect of Sun and Venus. As both have got only the 7th aspect, we should take it that they are placed in the 4th house and thereby aspects Mars. To aspect Saturn or Rahu they must have been placed either with Saturn or with Ketu respectively and in such a case the author might have said it expressly that Sun and Venus are also placed therein. Since the aspect point stated is following the position of Mars, we can conclude that Sun and Venus are aspecting Mars only. Results arising out of this yoga has not been stated by the author. In the subsequent slokas it has been stated that by doing Mantra Japa as well as giving donations, happiness of son results. Hence this Yoga must relate to some calamity to progeny especially son.

Chandrasekhar’s Comment: The reference to aspect of Sun and Venus is with respect to aspect on Mars in 10th bhava. What is happening here is that Saturn-Ketu in the 5th is indicative of possibility of giving up of progeny and Mars’s aspect thereon confirms the possibility some violent end to the progeny. The author seems to relate this to previous birth of the jataka. Sun’s aspect on Mars seems to add to the malevolence of Mars. The learned author has excluded Mercury from Sun-Venus as its aspect would strengthen the 10th bhava and would tame down the malevolence of Mars. Sun in the 4th and Mars aspect on 4th also indicates loss of happiness to native. That is perhaps why the author recommends recitation of the beej mantra of the malefics involved in the yoga and excludes Shukra from this. The 4

heavy affliction to the 5th house obviously means that in this life too the Jataka may not have progeny (unless the remedies suggested are done).

Chakra Daamini Yoga

28. Meaning: In the house owned by Mercury, Jupiter is placed; in the house owned by Jupiter, Venus is placed and in the house owned by Venus, Moon is placed then such a position is termed as Chakra Daamini Yoga. Persons born with this yoga will have mental adroitness or skill.; will have less libido and his eyes will resemble that of a lotus. He will definitely have long life and will become lord of the earth and will be a King.

Explanation: In Saravali under Chapter on Nabhasa Yogas we find the listing of Chakra and Damini as two separate Yogas. Chakra Yoga is formed when all the 7 planets (excluding the nodes) are placed in six odd houses. If all the seven planets occupy 6 rasis then Damini Yoga is formed. We can note that there is a subtle variation in the two yogas. However here the author has taken into consideration only four planets viz. Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Moon. Hence we have to conclude that this yoga has nothing to do with the Nabhasa Yogas.

Chandrashekhar’s Comment: This is certainly a different yoga.

Santana Nasa Yoga

29. Meaning: When Rahu is placed in the fourth house and 5th lord has conjoined Saturn, Santana Nasa Yoga is formed. To such a person initially there will be two or three female children and a son will be born later. He will be a famous person, will be morose and will have many servants at home. He will be of evil design, skilled in managing his family and in his previous birth he has committed infanticide and hence he will be without sons. He has to chant the mantras for Rahu, Mars and Saturn followed by donations at the earliest. (To clear from the dosha of infanticide). He will be enjoying other’s wives and not even one son will remain alive. He will have a fat body; will have wealth; will be a charitable person and a person with modesty.

Explanations: The next sloka tells about the remedies to be done which I have omitted.

Vipareeta Yoga

30. Meaning: In the house of Jupiter, Sun is placed, in the house of Sun, Venus is placed and Saturn, Mars and Moon are conjoined and placed in Aries which happen to be the 6th or the 8th house, then Vipareeta Yoga is formed. Because of

6

Brahma Hatya Dosha in the previous birth; native with such a yoga will be subjected to many sorrows in this birth.

Explanation: This yoga is possible only for two Lagnas which are Scorpio (When Aries will become the 6th house) and Virgo (when Aries will become the 8th house). One impossible position is also given. Sun is placed in the house of Jupiter means it must be either in Sagittarius or Pisces. Venus is stated to be placed in the house of Sun which is Leo. The maximum distance between Sun and Venus can be only 48 degrees approximately and so how this position is possible? Left for the discussion of more learned persons.

Chandrashekhar’s Comment: In the tropics this yoga is not possible. However it is possible that this position could occur in very high latitudes.

Other Options of this Yoga

Meaning: If the Lagna Lord is placed in the Vyaya Bhava (12th house) or Labha Bhava (11th house) and is conjoined with krura grahas (malefics) or aspected by them, then that native will be drinking intoxicants and will eating meat (will be a non-vegetarian) daily and was a Brahmin in his previous birth. Made his father sorrowful (probably by his mis-deeds) and hence he will lose three children. Persons born having these two yogas will have to be in distress on account of sons.

Explanation: The next sloka gives the remedial measures to clear the evil effects of this yoga which has been omitted.

Koota Yoga 7

31. Meaning: Koota Yoga is formed when lord of the 5th house conjoins Mars and is placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th and Moon is placed in the house of Saturn. A person having this yoga, in his previous birth has deprived his own kinsmen of their wealth (snatched the wealth probably by unfair means) and also will destroy his own family.

Explanation: Though the name is similar to that of Koota Yoga-one of Aakriti Yogas, from the conditions stated in the shloka, we find that this is quite a different Yoga.

Raja Yoga

32. Meaning: Jupiter in Cancer, Venus in the 9th house of Bhagya and Mars and Saturn in the 7th house make a person King of Kings.

Anubhaava Yoga

33. Meaning: Rahu in labhasthana (11th house), Mars in karmasthana (10th house), Moon in randhra (8th house) and Sun and Mercury in the 6th house combination is called Anubhaava Yoga. Such a person is called as a sublime sage. Such a person’s son will not live and even miscarriages will occur to his wife.

Explanation: Normally the word foetus or fetus is used for female, here what the author wants to say is that the person will not have any issues. In the next line the author talks about the wife of that person and says that she will be getting bad dreams and then goes on to give the remedial measures.

Chandrashekhar’s Comment: Grabhastrava means miscarriage, which would naturally occur to the person’s wife, should the chart belong to a male. The word putraa could be referring to daughters or it could mean he will lose many sons. This is a variation of Vipatti yoga.

Srimukha Yoga

34. Meaning: Jupiter in Janma Lagna, Venus in dharmasthana (9th house), Sun in karmasthana (10th house) will create Srimukha Yoga. By the age of twenty he will be honored by king and will have elephants and horses and wealth and have valour and strength akin to that of Indra.

Kapaala Yoga

35. Meaning: Lord of 5th house is placed in sukhasthana (4th house), lord of 6th house is placed in the 6th , 8th or 12th house along with Lagna lord and the 5th house is aspected by Saturn, Mars and Sun – Person born with such a Yoga will lose all his children (son) and if he worships the grahas and gives donations, he will get children (son).

Explanation: 5th Lord goes to the 4th means going to the Exit house as 4th house is the 12th house to 5th house. Lagna Lord goes to the 6th house along with the 6th lord and thus Lagna lord becomes ineffective. Three malefics are aspecting the 5th house. So it but natural that Putra Bhava as well as its lord is badly afflicted and hence there will be problem with regard to issues.

The author continues in the next lines that the native is bound to have termination of pregnancy in the 3rd or the 8th month of pregnancy. Even if the native gets issues, there will be sufferings on account of the child or the child may be engaged in doing bad deeds.

Pishaca Yoga

36. Meaning: Jupiter is placed in the house of Sun and in the house of Jupiter, Sun and Mercury are placed and in the 5th house Mars, Rahu and Venus are placed then it is called as Pishaca Yoga. Due to his avaricious nature for wealth, in his previous birth, he had killed his sister’s son. Due to the curse of his previous life, he will have no issues in this birth.

Chandrashekhar’s comment: This means Sun and Mercury have to be either in the 3rd, 4th or the 6th /7th house.

Vinasha Yoga

37. Meaning: Third lord is placed in the third house either conjoined with malefics or aspected by malefics and if Jupiter is placed in the house of Saturn then it is called as Vinasha Yoga.

11

Ananda Yoga

39. Meaning: Jupiter placed in the house of Saturn and Saturn placed in the house of Jupiter and the rest of the benefic and malefic planets are placed in labhasthana (11th house) constitute Ananda Yoga. Such a person will be sad during early days and when he becomes youth he will be happy and will enjoy till he attains 44 years.

Anujnatha Yoga

40. Meaning: Venus in the house of Mars, Mars in the house of Venus, Moon in the 4th house and Mercury in Aries will create Anujnatha Yoga. He will be devoted to God and Brahmins. Because of the good deeds of the previous life (Purva Punya) he will live with sons and grandsons.

Chandrashekhar’s comment: It is clear that Venus will also be in Aries for this yoga since, if Mercury is in Aries, Venus cannot be in scorpio.

Mrityupraja Yoga

* Part I appeared in earlier release of SA

In this part let us see some more Yogas described in Jytosih Sangraha.

One such Yoga is Mrityupraja Yoga. I am keeping the Sanskrit words used by the author as it is to make it more meaningful. मृत्यु means death and प्रजा in this context refers to the subject/person concerned.

When the 5th house is occupied by (1) Sun, Rahu, Saturn or Ketu or (2) Rahu and Mars – Mrityu Praja Yoga is formed. The effect of this yoga is that the native will get an offspring but that will not survive. The native who has such a Yoga will pass away in a good and holy place where there is sacred water. The word used is सुमतथय . Theertha means sacred water and any place having a sacred river, lake or ocean is called Theertha sthal or 3

theertha sthan or theertha kshetra. He is destined to be a Vishnu Baktha or worshipper of Mahavishnu. Even if he gets a child it will not survive. Even if one child survives, in the end he will be sorrowful on account of the child.

Note: I could not get any chart to verify this yoga.

Maha Sagar Yoga

Benefic planets Jupiter, Mercury, Venus and Moon should be placed in Kendras (1st, 4th, 7th and 10th) and Rahu in the 3rd house, Mars in the 6th house and Saturn in the 11th house, then this combination is termed as Maha Sagar Yoga. Those born with this yoga become a King or a Minister. He will suffer bodily due to Raja-Roga. He will be fond of worshipping Brahmin Devatas. He carries Sarpa Dosha from his previous life.

Note on Raja Roga: According to Dhanvantari, the Yakshma Roga (Tuberculosis) is a very deadly disease. Previously, it used to afflict only the great kings. Hence, it is called as Raja-Roga (a royal disease). Not caring about diet, irregular eating hours and not drinking fluids in adequate quantity are the causes of this disease. The body looses its vitality due to some ulterior reason. Eating without any distinctions also is another reason. Because of these, Raja-Roga sets in. With the result the whole body acquires a pale look. Throat-ache, short of breath feeling, a pain that appears to break the body limbs etc. are its other symptoms. This is a highly enervating disease.

मद्वजदेवा मद्वज means Brahmin and देवा means God. So the literal translation goes as Brahmin God. Brahmin here has nothing to do with the caste system. In the Vedic times Agni, Vayu, Surya and Soma or Moon were the main devatas. In the Upanishads we find the word Brahman who are like fire, Vayu and also Sun and Moon. They saw these Devatas as Brahmin. So one explanation of this word is that the native is fond of worshipping these Brahmin Devatas. The Puranic deities and their different forms of Gods that we worship today are also treated as Brahman as they possess the qualities of Brahman. We can go on expanding this principle to include the consorts of the three supreme divinities Brahma, Vishnu and Siva – Saraswathi, Lakshmi and Parvati. To quote the words of David Frawley “To see the Devatas (Gods and Godesses) as forms of Brahman is to really see the devatas. Each devata is a doorway on the infinite which is Brahman…” 4

Has anybody come across such a horoscope? I am yet to see one such chart.

Yama Kruti Yoga

The next Yoga is termed as Yama Kruti Yoga. The word itself describes the Yoga : that is the action of the God or Controller of death –Yama. For Aries and Scorpio Ascendants, if Rahu is placed in Lagna, Sun in the 3rd house and Mercury, Venus, Mars and Saturn in the 8th house, Yamakruti Yoga is applicable. A person born with this Yoga must have done Brahma Hatya in his previous birth on account of which he will be a very poor man in this birth and in spite of having progeny will be a destitute. He will suffer from Raja Roga (Tuberculosis) and he will be a sad person. If he worships Rahu, Saturn and Mars he will be benefitted.

If we draw the charts it will look like this2. [Refer comments at the end of the article,]

2 All charts have been inserted in this article using Keshav Menon’s Software for writers that he developed specially for Saptarishis Astrology. – SA 5

Brahma Hatya means killing a Brahmin. Here Brahmin is not by birth (caste) but by qualities of the living entity. The qualities as described in Vedas. So if a person has killed another person having the qualities of a Brahmin, then he comes under Brahma Hatya Dosha and he is punished badly in the next birth. If he has done the same Brahma Hatya in the previous life, he will be punished in the present life. One classic example is the chart of Sri Rama. Sri Rama had an exalted Jupiter in the Lagna but it was aspected by Saturn and Mars, which constituted the curse of a Brahmin. So for the curse of a Brahmin or Brahma Hatya Jupiter plays an important role as he is considered as Brahmin. Any conjunction between Saturn/Mars with Jupiter or aspect will indicate the curse of a Brahmin in a chart. But here the author has not taken into consideration Jupiter at all. Hence this is a deviation, and how far we can consider this to indicate Brahma Hatya Dosha is a big question and needs more extensive study.

As to the native being a very poor man, we can say that, for Aries Lagna, the Dhana Sthana as well as Labha Sthana Lords Venus and Saturn both are placed in a Dusthana. Saturn also indicates his Karma as the 10th lord. So the native will be poor and his karma may be begging. For Scorpio Lagna, we see that the 11th Lord Mercury goes to the 8th house. We cannot say anything about the 2nd Lord as Jupiter‟s position is not given.

Position of Sun in the 3rd house is generally considered as one of the strong points in a horoscope. With my little knowledge, I am unable to comprehend in what way this will indicate the results pointed out by the author. Probably, if we have some sample charts, the position may become more clear. 6

Overall, I am not convinced with the results given in the verse for the given combinations. Learned Scholars may kindly enlighten the same for the readers as well as me.

Mahisha Kruti Yoga

Unlike the previous Yoga, this Yoga though named as Mahisha Kruti Yoga meaning the action of a buffalo, there is no mention of any buffalo or any curse on account of some action in previous birth. The combinations for this Yoga are – Saturn and Rahu must be in the 4th house and Ketu and Mars in the 10th house and in the 6th house Moon, Venus and Sun. Results of this Yoga are – Native‟s elder brother will have no issues. Native will be afflicted by diseases often. Native‟s mother will also be put into big troubles. The author confirms that there will be no doubt on the results mentioned.

This is quite acceptable as the 10th house is the 12th house to the 11th house of elder brothers and the presence of two malefics Ketu and Rahu indicate some problem to the elder brother. The house of diseases-6th house gets afflicted due to the presence of Sun which is not good for health and the frequent troubles to the body is indicated by the aspect of Saturn on the 6th house. The 4th house indicating mother gets afflicted by the presence of two dire malefics.

Matru Ghaatak Yoga

Jupiter in Lagna, Saturn in Dhanasthan (2nd house) and Rahu in the 3rd house – Mother of a person having such a combination will not be living. Also if in a person‟s chart, Jupiter is in the 8th, Mars is in the 10th and Saturn is in Leo, his mother will not be living. In the 7

book named as „Maharnava‟ written by Rishi Bhrighu this Yoga named Matru Ghaatak is mentioned. घातुक् means matricide. घातक means killing or destroying.

In the latter part of this Yoga, it is also mentioned that the native in his previous birth has murdered his father and mother and hence in this birth he will be without mother.

Daridra Yoga

The next Yoga is Daridra Yoga. Malefics should be placed in all the four kendra places. Or all malefics must be placed in Dhanasthan or 2nd house. Any one who has such a position of planets, even if he is the son of a King, will be a pauper.

Vighaata Yoga

मवघात् means Destruction, removing, killing, impediment, abandoning, leaving. This Yoga gives the combinations which lead to the passing away of various relations of the native. Since the word „Jeevite‟ has been used, the said relations will not survive.

1. When Saturn is placed in Lagna or the 11th house with Moon in the 6th house and Mars in the 7th house, father and mother of the native will not survive.

2. When malefics are placed in the Lagna and also in the 7th house, then the native‟s parents become very unhappy and the spouse of the native will not survive.

3. If Lagna, 6th house, 8th house and 12th house are all occupied by malefics then such a native‟s progeny will not survive.

Natives born with such Vighaata Yoga will be respected by the King but they will have a weak constitution. 8

Trishu Ghaati Yoga

If in a person‟s horoscope Sun, Rahu, Mars and Saturn are placed either in Lagna or in the 5th house, then without doubt that native not only destroys or brings grief to himself but also to his father and mother. Such a native has done some wrong things to parents in his previous birth on account of which he will be issueless in this birth. This Yoga is called Trishu Ghaati Yoga. Because three persons get affected – Self, father and mother –this yoga is probably called Trishu Ghaati Yoga as „trishu‟ means three.

Other types of Trishu Ghaati Yoga –

1. In the rasi of Sun – Leo – Saturn sits and in the rasi of Mars – Aries and Scorpio – Rahu is placed and in the rasi of Rahu – Virgo (note the deviation here) – Sun is placed and in the rasi of Saturn – Capricorn and Aquarius – Mars is placed – This is one type.

2. Saturn, Rahu and Mars are placed in the 5th house, Lagna and 4th house respectively – This is the second type.

A person born with such combination loses his progeny. A person with any such combination definitely has Trishu Ghaati Yoga, be it a King‟s or Minister‟s son. He will always be doing bad deeds.

ith this I conclude the 2nd part of this Yoga series. In this Yogas, as I could not get sample charts for verification, I have given only the gist of the Sanskrit verses with certain explanations to some of the Yogas as I have understood them.

Immediately upon publication of this article in the Astro-Vision, I got two comments from learned and experienced astrologers which are reproduced below for the benefit of the readers:

Comment from Sri Jugal Kishore Kalani (Krushnaji)

“Sub: your write up on yogas

In your write up in Astro Vision you have written Sun in 3rd house and Me and Ve in 8th house. Please note that Mercury can not be away from Sun more than 36 degrees, and Venus more than 48 degrees approx. In such case how those planets can be in sixth house from Sun? If it for navmansha chart, it may be.

Thanks and regards

Krushana”

I have already sent a reply to Astro Vision which is yet to be published by them and the same is given below:

Immediately on receipt of this mail, I checked the Sanskrit sloka and I found that I have in fact committed a mistake in my translation. Yes. The translation should read as under:

For Lagna having Mars as Lord (meaning Aries and Scorpio), when Rahu is placed in Lagna and in the Sahaj Bhava which is the 3rd house Sun, Mercury and Venus are placed and in the 8th house Mars and Saturn are placed, Yama Kruti Yoga is formed.

On account of this change the chart given as example will also undergo change and will look like this: 10

As such the explanations given by me will also undergo changes:

For Aries Lagna – the 2nd Lord Venus has conjoined the 6th Lord Mercury and is aspected by the 8th Lord Mars. 11th Lord Saturn has gone to the hidden 8th house. No doubt the native will live like a poor man.

For Scorpio Lagna- the 2nd Lord happens to be Jupiter whose position is not known. 11th Lord Mercury is aspected by the 6th Lord Mars. Venus becomes the 12th Lord and has conjoined the 11th Lord.

I have crossed out the wrong portion in the original writing which is shown below: 11

Comments from Sri CSS:

I see that Jyotish sangraha is not following classic Sanskrit, but that is alright. In Mahasagar yoga again you find that Venus and Mercury are being said to be having to be in two kendras. This may not be possible at least on the equator and our part of the world though it could happen in higher latitudes. Bandhu bhava is the name of the 4th bhava, but the author does seem to use it to indicate the 3rd bhava.

I think by dvija devaa the author is indicating Brahmins and God, not the Brahmin god.

I think Mahishaakriti means in the figure of Buffalo, so it is one of the akriti yogas.

In daridra yoga I think the author is talking about a malefic in 4th bhava or the 2nd bhava. More than one malefic is not mentioned here, if what I am reading is right. I also think that this is an incomplete shloka.

In trishughata yoga harm to father (but not mother) in past life is indicated.

In anyaprakara yoga second line talks of Saturn, Rahu and Mars in 5th, Lagna and 4th respectively or in 5th only (all of them).

On the whole there do not appear to be much mistakes in the translation. The language used in the treatise does not seem to be pure Sanskrit and that might be the reason for inaccuracies to creep in. Viz. Saturn is called Sauri and not Shauri.
